Samples of work by POZ:
TITLE AND LOCATION : Alden Mountain, Newport Township, PA
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: 2003, design engineering, AutoCAD illustrations, technical specifications, environmental assessment, and construction estimates.
CONSTRUCTION: 2003, Project Management, and COR duties.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
This was a DOI, OSM project that required remediation of a dangerous mine opening that extended vertically several hundreds of feet to extensive abandoned underground mine workings, and had a significant wildlife resource value. The opening was situated in a 150-foot by 75-foot wide pit that was 50 feet deep. The project required an Environmental Assessment Statement (EA) through the DOI Dept. guidelines for NEPA, a review from various governmental agencies, a blasting permit, and construction with inspection services. The design of the project and volume calculations for construction costs were accomplished using AutoCAD with 3-D analysis. The work consisted of accessing a remote site using existing yet non-maintained roads, placing a 10-foot diameter pipe into a vertical mine entry, grouting the exterior perimeter of the pipe, blasting the remainder of the pit, installing a steel cage over the pipe, and restoring all disturbed areas with appropriate vegetative species.
TITLE AND LOCATION: Little Mahoney Twp. Subsidence, Little Mahanoy Township, PA
PROFESSI ONAL SERVICES: 2004, design engineering, AutoCAD illustrations, technical specifications, environmental assessment, and construction estimates.
CONSTRUCTION: 2005, Project Management, and COR duties.
BRIE F DESCRIPTION:
This was a DOI, OSM project that required closure of a dangerous mine subsidence that collapsed a road into a pit and interfaced abandoned underground mine workings. Site access for construction was difficult through existing but not maintained roads. The project required an EA through the DOI Dept. guidelines for NEPA, a review from various governmental agencies, a blasting permit, and construction with inspection services. A phase 1 study was accomplished using various state and federal agencies for specialized expertise and regulatory authority. Volume calculations for construction costs were estimated using AutoCAD with 3-D analysis (click on photo to the left to view movie).
TITLE AND LOCATION: Pike Street Mine Tunnel, Carbondale, PA.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: 2005, Design Engineer, AutoCAD illustrations, technical specifications, environmental assessment, and construction estimates.
CONSTRUCTION: 2005, Project Management.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This was a DOI, OSM project that required remediation of a dangerous mine opening that extended horizontally to an unknown distance that accessed extensive abandoned underground mine workings, had a significant wildlife, historic, and water resource value. The opening was situated in a riparian way along a high quality river. The opening required preservation as hibernacula for bats. Additionally, the site was researched as the entrance that killed 14 miners in the mid 1800s. The project required an Environmental Assessment Statement (EA) through the DOI Dept. guidelines for NEPA, a review from various governmental agencies, and construction with inspection services to include archeological monitoring. The design of the project for construction costs were accomplis hed using AutoCAD with 3-D analysis. The work consisted of accessing the site from the opposite side of the river using a crane and placing a 36" pipe through a bulkhead from the mine to the manhole, encasing the manhole in concrete and placing an angle iron cage on the top of the manhole above the 50 year flood plain.

TITLE AND LOCATION Williams Street Gas Problem, Dunmore Borough, PA
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: 2007 - Design Engineer, AutoCAD illustrations, technical specifications, environmental assessment, and construction estimates.
CONSTRUCTION: 2007 - Project Management.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This project required remediation of three homes with dangerous levels of carbon dioxide gas in the basement areas. Bio-venting systems were used to reduce the gas from 5% to 0.1% (below the international safety limit). CO2 monitors with data collectors were installed to measure efficiency of system. Each home has significant challenges. The project was successfully completed and did not exceed awarded amount.
TITLE AND LOCATION : Cortland Street Water Problem, Carbondale, PA
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: 2007 - Design Engineer, AutoCAD illustrations, technical specifications, environmental assessment, and construction estimates.
CONSTRUCTION: In design!
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This project required a hydrologic study of artesian groundwater from abandoned underground mine workings that flowed down city streets and sidewalks eroding the sub-base and foundations of homes. The study recommended capping the source of the effluent with a manhole type structure and piping the storm water into an existing coal company storm sewer. The project requires inspection of inlets and a survey of the shaft for cap and pipe installation. A 3-D CAD drawing was constructed from engineering calculations with structural challenges. Construction is expected to begin late fall.
